Ballad of mountain peak with the rhythm of chhau
Purulia District of West Bengal is famous for chhau dance. The tradition of folk song “Jhumur” and folk dance chhau is about three hundred years old. The poor landless laboures preserve this tradition.
Some enthusiastic young people consist of an academic Raha Mitra, Rahul Bose,a documentary film maker and Anirban Chatterjee, a theatre Director came at Balarampur of Purulia with a project for doing some innovative work with the chhau artisans. Their motto is to reduce the production cost and to gain mobility for the whole group for performing the chhau dance within the different parts of India abroad and by these means the artisans may earn their livelihood throughout the year.
They came at Balarampur at Suvash Roy’s house. Suvash, a Jhumur poet very helpful person introduced them with Nepal Kumar, a rich peasant and owner of a chhaudance group. He was against any change or development of traditional content and technical work.
The young people at last successfully produced “ Chitanggada Sanbad” of Rabindranath Tagore.
