ABOUT DIRECTOR

Born in 1963 to a family that had a great penchant for music both vocal and instrumental, Ranjan Roy’s passion for stage-acting had developed in his mind in his very childhood. His inherent thirst for performing on stage could not be satiated even through his regular participation at the school and local functions. His being of a state government employee or allegiance to a few local theatrical organizations one after another could not appease him anyway and he was still looking for something more significant suited to his zeal for culture and creativity. At this juncture, ”Bandel Arohee” came into being in 1987. The dyadic role of a director and an actor threw a new challenge at him which he readily accepted although he did not have any mentor ever to guide or advice him. He had only his working experience and knowledge gathered from literatre on theatre being a voracious reader thereof to rely upon. One-act play, street-drama, full-length drama, children’s drama embellish the success-story of “Bandel Arohee” so far, numerically standing at twenty-nine altogether at the last count. Recognitions have come in proportion to his contributions. Awards for the best actor and the best director on many occasions apart, the Theatre Academy of West Bengal have awarded him for the play titled “Chhenra Canvas”. His another laudable work lies in organizing workshops on theatre for school children deliberated over by the professionals from the Bond Street Theatre, u.s.a. and the Exile Theatre, Afganisthan severally for twenty days altogether. His versatility earned him 26 slots on the Alpha Bangla Channel of television to present his maiden short-screen directorial venture in 2002. Besides, a few documentaries and advertisement works add to his enviable achievements.
On 31st December , 2007 came a historic moment . On an invitation of “Annya Theatre “ made to Mr. Royand a few selected other directors to participate in the “Natya Swapna Kalpo”, he presented “Aaj jyotsna rate”-based on a story of Moti Nandy. once again , the audience applauded highly.
D.L Roy’s “Chandragupta “ is his latest contribution as a director which, which eventually is a maiden fulllength drama presented by “Bandel Arohee”. Apart from direction , Mr. Roy will also be seen playing the role of “Chanakya” here.
